Amanda Knox to Return to Italian Courtroom
A decade after being exonerated in a sensational murder case, Amanda Knox faces a new trial in Italy.
The former American exchange student will appear in court on Wednesday to face charges of slandering police officers who investigated the 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Knox was originally convicted of Kercher's murder in 2009 and sentenced to 26 years in prison. However, she was acquitted on appeal in 2011 and returned to the United States, where she has written a book and become an advocate for the wrongfully convicted.
In 2013, Knox was sued in Italy for slandering police officers who she had accused of misconduct during the murder investigation. The court found Knox guilty in absentia and sentenced her to three years in prison. However, the sentence was overturned in 2015 by Italy's highest court.
On Wednesday, Knox will return to Italy to face a retrial on the slander charges. The outcome of the trial is uncertain, but it could have a significant impact on Knox's life and reputation.
